According to the new EU directive, urgent action is needed to ensure that treated wastewater does not further pollute the environment \u2013 especially in sensitive areas such as the Mura\u2013Drava\u2013Danube UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.<\/p>\n<p>Why is this important?<\/p>\n<p>Small streams and watercourses receiving treated wastewater have such a low water flow that they cannot sufficiently dilute possible micropollutants \u2013 such as pharmaceutical residues. These substances can harm aquatic life and even threaten our drinking water sources.<\/p>\n<p>What are we doing?<\/p>\n<p>Within the Slovenian\u2013Hungarian project, we are monitoring 5 wastewater treatment plants and several small watercourses in the middle section of the Mura River.
