Project overview
The KeepItDark project is a collaborative cross-border initiative that brings together four partners to address the escalating issue of light pollution in our shared region. This project specifically targets the negative impact of artificial lighting on nocturnal wildlife, ecosystems, and human health.
Across the programme area, increasing light pollution is a significant concern. It disrupts the natural activities of nocturnal animals, alters ecological dynamics, and affects human well-being. The project unites partners in a joint mission to curb this environmental issue.
The primary goal of KeepItDark is to markedly reduce light pollution and restore areas of natural darkness. This initiative aims to create a healthier environment for night-time wildlife, boost biodiversity, and foster a community-wide appreciation for dark skies. The anticipated change includes a substantial reduction in light pollution, leading to improved environmental conditions and increased public awareness.
The project’s key aims encompass a comprehensive assessment and mapping of the current state of light pollution and its impact on nocturnal biodiversity within the cross-border area, thereby establishing a detailed baseline and set of recommendations that will inform and catalyse targeted mitigation actions in the project and after its completion.
Furthermore, KeepItDark intends to significantly raise awareness and understanding among the general public, schoolchildren, local communities, and key stakeholders of the impacts of light pollution on biodiversity and human well-being, thereby fostering a community-wide commitment to the protection and restoration of natural dark environments. To achieve this, the partners will commit to the development of a cross-border educational hiking trail with supporting equipment, initiatives for astro-tourism and various educational programmes, and the creation of an action plan for achieving DarkSky Community certification, the first cross-border community of this kind in the world. These outcomes are intended to benefit various groups, including local residents, tourists, environmental educators, and conservationists, enhancing both environmental and community health.
KeepItDark employs a cross-border approach, essential for effectively tackling the widespread issue of light pollution, which knows no borders. This collaborative effort allows for the pooling of resources, expertise, and experiences, leading to more effective solutions. It also encourages the sharing of best practices and fosters a collective approach to environmental stewardship.
What sets KeepItDark apart is its comprehensive strategy, merging environmental conservation with community engagement and sustainable tourism. The pursuit of the first cross-border DarkSky Community certification is a pioneering effort, positioning the project as a model for dark sky preservation. This innovative approach not only addresses environmental concerns but also bolsters the region’s appeal and identity, presenting a sustainable model for harmonising development with ecological preservation.
