The project “Namizni tenis povezuje” successfully achieved its objective of fostering meaningful connections between people through sports activities. The primary aim was to bring together individuals from both sides of the border, particularly from the Pomurje region in Slovenia and Vas County in Hungary, while promoting the sport of table tennis among athletes and the general public alike.

The project was carried out by two partner organizations: the Table Tennis Club Sobota from Murska Sobota (Slovenia) and the Szombathely Table Tennis Club (Hungary). The Hungarian partner boasts exceptional training facilities, which made Szombathely the venue for most of the project events.

The first event, held on 24 February 2024, saw veterans, recreational players, and athletes with disabilities gather for an opportunity to meet, interact, and compete. During the mixed doubles matches, teams were formed with one member from Hungary and one from Slovenia, encouraging cross-border collaboration. The day concluded with the formation of new friendships and a positive, welcoming atmosphere.

The second event, a three-day camp from 28 February to 1 March 2024, was dedicated to table tennis and took place in Szombathely. The camp primarily catered to young participants, many of whom were accompanied by their parents. The camp featured mixed-team competitions designed to maximize social interaction, alongside presentations by two coaches—one from Slovenia and one from Hungary—on the importance of serving techniques in table tennis. In addition to the training, participants had the opportunity to relax and engage in social activities, including sightseeing, walks, and shared meals.

The project activities continued with a two-day camp held on 1 and 2 May 2024, focusing on table tennis for children. The camp provided participants with ample opportunities for play and competition, as well as educational sessions on the significance of physical movement and anticipatory skills in the sport. In the evenings, the children were able to unwind by enjoying pizza, soft drinks, and the chance to strengthen friendships in a relaxed, friendly environment. The feedback from the children was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing a desire for future camps.

The fourth meeting took place alongside two traditional competitions in Murska Sobota: the 54th Open Championship of Murska Sobota for Youth on 31 August 2024, and the 9th Mirko Unger Memorial Tournament for Veterans and Recreational Players on 1 September 2024. Hungarian participants joined Slovenian athletes for a day of competitive table tennis, followed by a social gathering where participants enjoyed traditional Slovenian food, including čevapčiči and tomatoes, provided by the hosts. This event offered an excellent opportunity for both competition and fostering new friendships.

The fifth meeting, held on 20 September 2024, was initially planned for Murska Sobota but was relocated to Szombathely due to the superior facilities available there. The event focused on the return matches from the first meeting. Participants competed once again in mixed pairs, with one player from Slovenia and one from Hungary. After the games, everyone gathered to share pizza, drinks, and enjoyable conversation, further strengthening the cross-border bonds.

The final project event, held on 28 September 2024, was part of the Legends Tournament organized by NTK Sobota to commemorate the 100th anniversary of table tennis in Murska Sobota. The Hungarian partner club also celebrated its 30th anniversary of operation. The event began with a nostalgic session where past achievements and memories were shared, followed by the tournament. The gathering concluded with a social event, where participants enjoyed food and drinks in a lively and welcoming atmosphere.

In conclusion, the project has undoubtedly achieved its goal of building lasting connections between people through the shared love of table tennis. The activities facilitated the creation of numerous new friendships, and there is now a collective intent to expand the project to include additional table tennis clubs in the region. We are confident that these connections will continue to grow, strengthening ties across borders and fostering a deeper sense of community and cooperation
