Several major cycling trails cross the Slovenia–Hungary border region, each with its own background and thematic focus. For visitors, however, these routes form part of a connected tourism experience. It is therefore important that information, services, trail conditions and communication are coordinated across the region.
The developed model aims to strengthen this approach. Rather than establishing a new organisation, it provides a common operational framework for existing tourism organisations, municipalities, trail managers and service providers.
The model distinguishes between tasks that should be carried out jointly and those that require coordination. Branding, the development of key messages and destination-level planning, for example, require a joint approach. Trail maintenance, information updates and the organisation of local events, on the other hand, are generally carried out at local or regional level, based on shared principles.
The model also supports the operation of the Amazon of Europe Bike Trail, the EuroVelo 13 – Iron Curtain Trail and the Aura Bike Trail, developed within the ICDM project. Although the three trails have different characteristics, they all connect the natural, cultural and community values of the border region.
The implementation of the model can help cyclists access more up-to-date information, better coordinated routes and services of a more consistent quality. For local service providers, it also creates opportunities to become involved in joint communication activities, training programmes and the development of the region’s tourism offer.
The document was finalised in 2026 as a result of workshops held in 2025 and 2026, professional consultations and the joint work of the project partners. The model builds on existing organisations and capacities, providing a framework that can continue to support cooperation in the region even after the project has ended.
