The RE-ACTION project, focusing on the development of rural tourism in the Slovenian-Hungarian border region, was presented as an exhibitor at ÖKO-EXPO, held in Szombathely on 17–18 September 2026.

The event provided an opportunity to introduce the project to a wider audience and to discuss the specific characteristics and opportunities of rural tourism in the border region. Visitors could learn about the main objectives of RE-ACTION, which aims to strengthen the competitiveness and sustainability of rural tourism businesses by building on the region’s natural and cultural assets.

Particular attention was given to the project’s pilot programme. Visitors were introduced to the businesses participating in the pilot activities and to the types of tourism experiences being developed within the project. These include nature-based, active and slow tourism experiences, as well as programmes supporting digital detox and a more sustainable way of discovering the border region.

The discussions at the exhibition also demonstrated that cross-border tourism development can generate ideas extending beyond the project’s immediate activities. One of the visitors raised the idea of creating a joint Slovenian-Hungarian database of companies, which could support greater visibility of local businesses and facilitate future contacts and cooperation across the border. While this idea is not part of the current RE-ACTION activities, it reflects the wider interest in strengthening business and tourism connections between the two sides of the border.

Participation at ÖKO-EXPO therefore served not only as an opportunity to disseminate information about RE-ACTION, but also as a platform for dialogue with local stakeholders and the wider public. The feedback and ideas received during the event contribute to a better understanding of the needs and expectations of the region and may provide useful inspiration for future cross-border cooperation.

Through such activities, RE-ACTION continues to promote the Slovenian-Hungarian border region as a destination where natural and cultural heritage, local businesses and sustainable tourism can create new opportunities for both visitors and local communities.
